Remember our previous article about Toyota's partnership with Pizza Hut for self-driving pizza delivery cars? If you didn't know already, Domino's Pizza and Ford Motor Co. launched an industry-first collaboration starting August 2017 to better understand customers' reactions to receiving pizzas via self-driving vehicle.
“We pride ourselves on being technology leaders and are excited to help lead research into how self-driving vehicles may play a role in the future of pizza delivery.” — Patrick Doyle, Domino's President, and CEO
The participants will be able to track their order through a Domino's mobile application and will receive a code to unlock Heatwave Compartment — a container designed keeps pizza warm and safe. Other information will be communicated through screens and speakers on the exterior of the cars.
Our industry-first collaboration to develop a self-driving pizza delivery vehicle with @Ford is taking us to @CES next week. Stay tuned to see what's next for our self-driving vehicle in 2018! Because Ford considers the customer and user experience aspects of autonomous driving technology a core part of the overall platform it is developing, conducting researches with companies, like Domino's, will be crucial to ensuring that the technology is applied in ways that enhance customer experience.
The competition for mastering self-driving vehicle technology continues to grow as carmakers such as Toyota and Ford invest heavily in autonomous technology. Ford plans to begin production of self-driving vehicles in 2021 and announced plans to invest $1 billion during the next five years in ArgoAI, an artificial intelligence startup established to tackle the most challenging applications in self-driving vehicles.
“While it’s pizza delivery today, my hope is that collaborations such as this will enable even more innovations tomorrow.” — Chris Taylor, Mayor of Ann Arbor
