Pizza Hut and Toyota are partnering up to make self-driving pizza delivery trucks. For all my fellow Black Mirror fans out there, yes—this is exactly like the ones in Season 4 Episode 3 "Crocodile."
Artie Starrs, Pizza Hut's US president, said they are "focused on technology-based solutions that enable our team members and drivers to deliver even better customer experiences" and that this partnership will,
"define the pizza delivery experience of the future."
At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week, Toyota Motor Corporation's president Akio Toyoda unveiled the e-Palette, Toyota's autonomous concept vehicle. The Pizza Hut car will deliver (and possibly cook pizzas) as early as 2020. Zack Hicks, CEO of Toyota Connected, said,
"The common ground between our two global brands is fueled by innovation that enriches peoples' lives."
Considering Pizza Hut's recent initiatives to provide their customers the best possible pizza delivery experience, this announcement shouldn't come as a surprise. In addition to the self-driving delivery cars, Toyota and Pizza Hut are also experimenting with dual communication technology to gather data on driver patterns and behavior to improve their existing delivery structure. Is this real life? @pizzahut is working on self-driving delivery trucks. 🍕🚚🙌https://t.co/Zzh4uSsbqF pic.twitter.com/cFoYGS3UJz— CNN Tech (@cnntech) January 8, 2018
I'm interested in seeing how everything pans out and the success of these driverless delivery trucks. Many people are concerned over what this means for employment in the coming years. Are people being replaced by robots?
