Snapchat's Big Redesign: Separating Social from Media or Muddying its Core?

Snapchat, a popular image messaging and multimedia mobile application, announced its new and "improved" version of Snapchat redesign on November 29, 2017. The new Snapchat separates the social from the media. This means that the Chats and Stories from your friends are on the left side of Snapchat, and the Stories from publishers, creators, and the community are on the right.

Essentially, you now have a feed you can scroll through and watch (much like Facebook and Instagram) Instead of just talking to friends. So many users have been unhappy with the redesign that they started a petition, with over 523,500 signatures and counting!

Snapchat claims that this new separating social from the media was to achieve the best way to communicate with friends and the best way to watch great content. However, many users disagree and even makes an argument that Snapchat is hoping to generate more revenue by providing more space for the media.
For users who do not enjoy watching or scouting for advertisements and media on the right tab, the redesign makes the left tab way too cluttered while the right tab becomes completely useless. If anything, people used to watch media on Snapchat because they were already on the right tab watching their friends' personal stories and found interesting article titles.
"An algorithmic Stories list? Great. Grouping all professional content creators together? Okay. Muddying its core use case with an upsell to money-making Stories? A risky bet when dealing with fickle teenagers." - Josh Constine
Snapchat's main focus should be delivering the best in-app experience possible for its users, not their paid advertisers — especially if they are hoping to avoid endless angry and confused tweets from upset users.
